The 61-year-old roofing contractor made a remarkable recovery and has been working to regain use of his legs since leaving the hospital in late October.

Corcoran's sister, Florence, is hoping to raise $50,000 to help pay his medical and rehab bills. As of Wednesday, contributors to a YouCaring page had raised nearly $12,500 -- much of it from around his hometown.

"Edgewater has deep roots and they take care of their own, and I think it is really heartwarming to see that play out," Cocoran's daughter, Nichole, told Daily Voice.

Cocoran's lifelong friend, John Thompson, is also organizing a benefit concert with his Edgewater band, The River Rats, on April 2 in New York City.

"John is a good man who would help anybody in need," Thompson told Daily Voice. "He didn’t have great insurance and he had a ton of bills and is still not back to work so we thought we would give him a hand."
